Pinterest has so many diy recipes and this is where I got the idea to start making soaps. Right away I knew how fun it would be to try it out just from watching little reels and videos. I also have been wanting to use less chemicals on my skin and I thought this would be a great place to start since I tried deodarant first and that was a total fail. A little back story on different types of soap making. So there is two methods of making soap that I use, melt and pour and cold process. Most of the soap I create is cold process, which is more work than melt and pour and yeilds better results. Cold process is when you choose oils of your liking such as: olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter etc; along with the main ingredient sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide is a soaponyfing agent, which pretty much creates a bar or loaf of soap. Soap making through the cold process method has a waiting period before you can use that soap. Usually soap wont be ready for about 4-6 weeks using the cold process method. This is so the soap can cure and the sodium hydroxide and oils can fully do it's work. The melt and pour method is a bit less work and the soap will be ready immediately. The melt and pour process consists of melting a block of a soap base then combining the ingredients of your preference such as essential oils.
The first batch of soap I ever made was a bit of a fail, but that's how it should be right? Well I tried following a recipe off of some YouTuber and it seemed to be going well until the soap started to harden up on me as I was blending it. I quickly had to throw it into my mold and wait to see what would happen. I waited 24 hours to unmold the soap and it came out extremely soft. I guess I got too excited and made my first batch of soap without double checking any ingredients or extra steps I should've taken. Anyways, I waited the 4 weeks for my soap to finish curing and it didn't come out aesthecically pleasing but it did it's job as a bar of soap. From there on, my soaps have been getting better and better. Well except one time I forgot to leave a window open while I was making a batch of soap and I felt dizzy the rest of the day. That was dangerous (Sodium hydroxide is a caustic chemical) but do not fear, all of it is gone by the time the curing period is over. Other than that, things have been going great but WOW is it hard work to make a batch of soap. After soap making, the kitchen looks like a baby dinosaur ran in there looking for food.
Well I'm excited to get my products out there and share the skin loving ingredients. Yay for my first blog! I feel so basic! Woo!
